Research interests and current projects:

My research interests concentrate on drying related processes including drying of highly deformable solids (gels), drying in superheated steam, supercritical drying, simulation of drying processes.
Current research projects include:

Aerogel filters for filtration of nanometric particles.
Aerogel layer is deposited on fibrous mat substrate by sol-gel technology and supercritical drying. The properties of the aerogel layer as filtration medium are studied. Simulation of Knudsen gas flow in aerogel structure was performed and compared to experimental results of permeability. Filtration experiments in the range 10-100 nm were performed. At present methods of filter hydrophobisation are investigated. Potential medical applications are foreseen.
One Ph.D. thesis completed, one in progress.

Simulation of convective drying of highly shrinking gel cylinders
Experiments are made on convective drying of gel cylinders in carefully controlled conditions. Three models describing the process of drying with shrinkage are used to identify the dependence of effective water diffusivity in gel on temperature and moisture content in the range of uniform shrinkage. At present, drying stress is not considered. The study may be considered as preliminary before embarking on nonlinear problem of stress-deformation model of drying.

Drying of biomass in superheated steam flash dryer
Superheated steam flash drying may become a standard tool for drying large amounts of biomass produced in Poland as renewable fuel. An experimental rig for measurements of sorption isobars and kinetics of drying of a single particle (wood chip) was constructed. Simulation studies were performed comparing superheated steam drying and rotary convective drying of wood biomass. A two-dimensional model of flash drying is used to simulate drying in a flash dryer.
Two Ph.D. initiated.

Continuous development of computer code dryPAK for simulation of drying processes.
The program was distributed to over 50 international users including large companies.
