1. GENERAL

The Baltic University Programme will arrange this year student conference in Borki, Poland on April 17-21. With this letter we have the pleasure to invite students from all universities in the network to apply for participation and wish you welcome to Borki.

Place and time:
This year conference is fourth in row to be organised in Borki (a small village 50 km outside Lodz) in Poland. The Technical University of Lodz will again serve as hosting institution with Prof. Ireneusz Zbicinski from the Faculty of Process and Environmental Engineering as main organiser.

The conference will start on Wednesday 17th of April at 17.00 and end on Sunday 21ed of April at 10.00. Wednesday and Sunday are thus travelling days.

2. THEME OF THE CONFERENCE 2002

Students from all over the region will have a possibility to meet and mix, but there is also a theme for this year conference:

BUILDING A SUSTAINABLE BALTIC REGION -
COOPERATION AND COMMUNICATION

The theme will be developed in several ways:

  • Student teams will role-play to build sustainable cities. The cities will interact in co-operation (or be in conflict).
  • Students will make a presentations of themselves, to develop intercultural communication skills.
  • Students will visit the city of Lodz and get to know how this city has developed through history.
  • Of course when students from 12 countries meet and mix it is in itself a practice in communication skills

3. BALTIC UNIVERSITY STUDENTS PARLIAMENT

The students will get the opportunity to conduct a BUP parliament session.

Students are encouraged to prepare bills (proposals) for the session. The proposals will be taken to the BUP Board by representatives that are elected in Borki.

Dzamila Bienkowska from Uppsala University, who is student member of the Baltic University Programme Board, will be responsible during the conference for planning and carrying through the discussions in the students' parliament.

Five students from Finland and four students from Belarus will be responsible for helping Dzamila with her task. Students from Belarus should choose those four and let the BUP secretariat /Maria Winkler know their e-mail addresses as soon as possible.

4. STUDENTS PREPARATION

The students should be prepared for the conference in the following ways:

  • To write a small (half a page) presentation on themselves, to be used in the verbal presentation
  • Five students from Finland will be elected to assist in the parliament session (Please send e-mail addresses to Maria Winkler as soon as possible)
  • Four students from Belarus will be elected to assist in the parliament session (Please send e-mail addresses to Maria Winkler as soon as possible)

5. IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR PARTICIPATING STUDENTS

Costs for participation
The Baltic University Programme will cover budget travel cost (all kinds of transportation allowed except air!) and all expenses for the participants during their visit in Borki in connection with the conference.

Arrival
A couch will be waiting for all students at the central railway station in Warszawa on 17th of April at 15.00 (meeting place - main hall at the station, just outside the ticket office nr 1). Students from Lodz and Warszawa will be there earlier to help and guide those who are coming to Warszawa earlier this day.
The couch will take all students to Borki where we expect to start the conference at 17.00. I would strongly recommend you to be in time for the couch since the way to Borki on your own can be rather complicated and can even include some risk for reduction of final number of students on place. But for those who can not avoid being late and those who need some adventure, instruction on how to go to Borki is given below.

Notice of arrival time
Please remember to let Ireneusz Zbicinski know your arrival time!!!! (address see below)

Notice of travel arrangements
Please once confirming your participation let me know your travel arrangements, including cost of travel. The Baltic University Programme will cover full cost of participation and budget travel (NOTICE that flight ticket will be not reimburse) for those who take part in the entire seminar. Please keep all your tickets which I will collect during the conference to be able to pay your travel costs. Do not hesitate to contact me or Ireneusz Zbicinski in case of any troubles concerning travel, visa, invitation or for more information.

Looking forward to seeing you in Borki

With best wishes - Maria Winkler
