Dear friends at the BUP-centers,
Please find enclosed information regarding the BUP summer activities. We kindly request you to send this message to all BUP teachers in your country, and ask them to send the names of their students back to you by May 20. We then look forward to have your lists at the Secretariat by May 24.

Please pay special attention to the students' knowledge of English. It is important that they are able to communicate, discuss, give presentations etc, not to mention all the social activities. On Pogoria a good knowledge of English is of great importance, because a weak language command could become a security risk for everyone on board.

Travel costs to and from the summer activities are reimbursed for students from Ukraine, Belarus and Russia.

The Baltic University Programme
Student activities, summer, 2002

Preliminary information

The Baltic University Programme will arrange this summer three different activities for students:

• Summer camp in Belarus (12-22 July)
• Summer field course at Hel Marine Station, Poland (15-25 August)
• Summer cruise on board sailing ship Pogoria (1-15 September)

With this letter we have the pleasure to invite students from all universities in the Baltic University Programme network to apply for participation and wish you a summer full of adventures with the Baltic University Programme.

Place and time:

• Summer camp (for 30 students) in Belarus, 12 - 22 July
  The summer camp will take place in a small town Dzierzinsk, some 50 km from Minsk. The BUP Centre in Belarus at Belarusan Polytechnical Academy will serve as a hosting institution with Sergei Dorozhko from the Ecology Department as main organiser.
• Summer Field Station course (for 30 students) at Hel Marine Station, outside Gdansk, Poland, 15 - 25 August
  It will take place at the Polish coast. The course will be organised in cooperation with the Hel Marine Station, University of Gdansk.
• Summer cruise on board Pogoria (for 40 students and teachers), 1 - 15 September
  Pogoria will leave Gdynia in Poland on September 1 and return to Gdynia on 15th of September. She will cruise Baltic Sea and visit some 4 harbours in different countries (preliminary route: Gdynia + Hel/Poland, Mariehamn/Finland, Umeå + Visby/Sweden).

The programme

Each summer activity has a scientific programme, to which a detailed programme will be sent out later. Additionally each student should prepare a presentation (30-45 min), which has a Baltic Sea Regional dimension. It should also include aspects of sustainable development (regional or local) and focus on, for instance, a country presentation, a cultural or environmental case-study etc. Students should also be prepared to comment and discuss the presentations.

In order to facilitate the programme planning the students are asked to indicate the title of the presentation in the registration form.

Selection of students

The summer activities are intended as a reward for the most active students of the Baltic University Programme. For each of those three activities we will have place for 30 students. On Pogoria there are in addition some places for the BUP teachers. Students who studied any of BUP courses are welcome although those who took more than one of the Baltic University courses have priority. Please note that all activities will be carried out using English language. Teachers should therefore pay special attention to the students skills in speaking and writing English.

Additionally and due to security reasons, a good command of English is obligatory on Pogoria.

Teachers taking part in Pogoria cruise will be asked to give a lecture to the students and help with the seminars on board.

Teachers of BUP courses are asked to choose students, list them according to priority and send the list to their national center, not later than May 20, 2002.

Number of students

The 30 student places have been distributed among countries as follows:

If a country does not fill up its places they will be divided among the others.

Costs for participation

The Baltic University Programme will cover all expenses for the participants (students and teachers) during the summer activities.
Participants are expected to cover their own travel costs.
However, students from Russia, Ukraine and Belarus will also have their travel costs reimbursed (by the cheapest possible way of transportation, please!)
